Manchester United’s Ruben Amorim under fire after Brentford defeat

Manchester United’s wait for back-to-back league wins under Ruben Amorim goes on after a 3-1 defeat at Brentford left them stuck in the bottom half of the table.

The Portuguese coach has now won just nine of his 33 Premier League games, with his future under increasing scrutiny.

Amorim had labelled the clash at Brentford as United’s “most important game in a long time,” but his side failed to deliver.

After last week’s victory over 10-man Chelsea, hopes of momentum were dashed once more.

Brentford exposed United’s two-man midfield pivot of Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, with Jordan Henderson, Yehor Yarmoliuk and Mikkel Damsgaard overloading the centre.

United’s struggles away from Old Trafford continued, stretching their winless away run to eight league matches.

Amorim refused to blame his tactical system, saying:

“It’s always the same, when we win it’s not the system, when we lose it’s the system.”

Brentford boss Keith Andrews explained his plan:

“One of which would be if we have a three-man midfield, they have a two. We tried to entice them onto us and play around or through them.”

Sky pundit Gary Neville recently warned that lingering in the bottom half by October could spell danger for Amorim, while the coach himself insists he is unconcerned about his job:

“I’m always comfortable with the job. I will do the best I can in every minute that I’m here. I’m never concerned for my job.”

But with a 27.3% win rate — the lowest of any post-Ferguson manager — and Sunderland up next at Old Trafford, Amorim knows results are the only thing that can buy him time.
