White House opposes Israel World Cup ban after UN calls for suspension

The White House has confirmed it will oppose any move to ban Israel from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after a UN advisory panel called for both FIFA and UEFA to suspend Israel from international football. The statement comes as Israel continues its qualifiers and club teams remain active in European competitions.

WHITE HOUSE RESPONDS

The United States government has made it clear that it will step in to block “any effort” aimed at excluding Israel from the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. A state department spokesperson told Sky News:

“We will absolutely work to fully stop any effort to attempt to ban Israel’s national soccer team from the World Cup.”

This response follows recommendations from a UN advisory panel urging FIFA and UEFA to suspend Israel and its clubs due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

FIFA YET TO REACT

So far, FIFA has not issued a formal response to the UN panel’s statement. Despite the calls for suspension, Israel remains an active participant in World Cup qualifying. They are scheduled to face Norway and Italy away in October before hosting Moldova in November.

At club level, Maccabi Tel Aviv continue to compete in the Europa League. They recently played out a goalless draw with Greek side PAOK FC and will face Aston Villa in November.

POLITICAL DIMENSIONS

The issue carries strong political undertones. The US, a longstanding ally of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has moved quickly to shut down talk of a ban.

The 2026 World Cup itself already faces potential hurdles beyond Israel’s status. Visa restrictions could affect fan access, especially for nations like Iran that have already qualified.

TRUMP CONNECTIONS TO FIFA

Former US President Donald Trump’s involvement with FIFA adds another layer of complexity. Trump has previously suggested controversial ideas such as making Canada the 51st US state and has made remarks about Mexico that drew backlash.

Yet, ties between FIFA and Trump appear strong. FIFA president Gianni Infantino attended Trump’s inauguration, while FIFA has opened its US offices in Trump Tower, New York. Trump also still owns the original Club World Cup trophy.

PALESTINE QUALIFIERS

On the pitch, Palestine have continued their qualification campaign, recently beating Kuwait 2-0 and drawing 1-1 with Oman, results that keep them competitive in their World Cup group.
