Jamie Carragher slams Sancho after Villa loan move

Jamie Carragher has delivered a damning assessment of Jadon Sancho, calling him one of Manchester United’s worst-ever signings. The winger has left Old Trafford on loan again, this time joining Aston Villa.

  • Carragher says Sancho lacks standout qualities as a player
  • The winger cost United £73m but never delivered on expectations
  • Paul Scholes also doubts the Villa move will revive his career

THE CONTEXT

Sancho joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73m but has failed to impress. He hasn’t featured for the club since a brief cameo in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City last season.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Chelsea and was linked with Besiktas, Roma, and Juventus before sealing a deadline-day switch to Aston Villa. Villa will cover 80% of his wages, and Sancho admitted he was “inspired” by his talks with Unai Emery.

BEYOND HEADLINES

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, YouTuber Adam McKola labelled Sancho as United’s “worst ever signing.” Jamie Carragher agreed, suggesting the winger never truly had the ability to justify his reputation.

“It’s funny with Sancho because he got the reputation with Borussia Dortmund,” Carragher said. “When you say he’s the worst Man Utd signing because of his ability… I’m not sure there’s much ability there. I don’t understand what his thing is. I’ve never seen it in my life. I haven’t.”

WHAT CARRAGHER & PAUL SCHOLES SAID

Jamie Carragher went further by contrasting Sancho with Marcus Rashford, noting that at least Rashford’s pace and shooting could define him as a player. By contrast, he argued that Sancho lacks any defining trait that makes him a threat on the pitch.

United legend Paul Scholes also questioned the signing, stating:

“Unai Emery might be good for Sancho but I do think it’s a weird signing. Villa Park is a massive pitch and he’s got a lack of pace and a lack of legs. He’s got some brilliance but what’s his real strength? I don’t really know.”

WHAT NEXT FOR SANCHOS?

Sancho could make his Aston Villa debut when they face Everton in the Premier League this Saturday. With Villa winless in their first three games, Unai Emery will hope his new recruit can finally rediscover his form.
