Andre Onana loan to Trabzonspor remains uncertain

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana could leave Old Trafford this month, but his proposed loan move to Trabzonspor is far from guaranteed.

The Turkish club are pushing to sign the Cameroon international before the September 12 transfer deadline, yet Onana is waiting to review contract terms before making a final call on his future.

INSIDE THE MOVE

Talks are ongoing between Manchester United and Trabzonspor over a season-long loan. The deal currently includes no loan fee and no purchase option. According to The Athletic, Trabzonspor hope to register Onana in time for their clash with Fenerbahce on September 14.

THE NUMBERS BEHIND IT

United paid up to £48m ($65m) to sign Onana from Inter Milan in July 2023. Since then, injuries and form have affected his role, with the goalkeeper making just one appearance this season. That came in the Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby, where he made costly errors but also saved a penalty in the shootout.

CLUB’S STANCE

Manchester United are open to letting Onana leave on loan, but the final decision rests with the player. Manager Ruben Amorim has already turned to younger options such as Senne Lammens, reducing Onana’s chances of regular football at Old Trafford.

PLAYER’S POSITION

Onana, 29, wants to play regularly and is open to a fresh start. However, he is carefully reviewing Trabzonspor’s contract terms before committing to the switch. His representatives have already asked United for clarity over his role after he lost his starting spot.

WHAT COME NEXT?

Trabzonspor have until September 12 to finalise the deal. If Onana agrees, he could debut against Fenerbahce just two days later. If not, he is expected to remain at United until January, though his prospects of regaining the No.1 role appear slim.
