Explained: Why Erling Haaland wears ‘Braut Haaland’ on his Norway jersey – family tradition, heritage and naming culture behind the change

Why Haaland wears ‘Braut Haaland’ for Norway

When Erling Haaland steps out for Norway, his jersey doesn’t just say “Haaland” — it proudly reads “Braut Haaland.” The Manchester City striker made the change in August 2025 to honor his family roots and national tradition.

WHY DOES HAALAND USE ‘BRAUT HAALAND’?

In Norway, surnames often combine both maternal and paternal heritage. Haaland’s full name is Erling Braut Haaland — with “Braut” coming from his mother, Gry Marita Braut, and “Haaland” from his father, Alf-Inge Haaland.

By displaying both, Haaland is following long-standing cultural practices where family identity and regional ties are reflected on official documents and, in this case, on the national team shirt.

CLUB FOOTBALL VS NATIONAL TEAM

At club level with Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and Salzburg, the shorter “Haaland” has always been used for branding and shirt sales. But for Norway, heritage takes priority, meaning the striker’s full surname appears across his back.

Interestingly, this isn’t new. Haaland was already registered as Erling Braut Haaland at the 2019 U-20 World Cup, when he famously scored nine goals against Honduras. Among Norwegian fans, he is even nicknamed “Brauten” — which translates as The Braut.

A NOD TO HIS ROOTS

The use of “Braut Haaland” is not about image or marketing. Instead, it’s a personal gesture, linking him to his upbringing in Bryne, the town where his football journey began.

On social media, Haaland already goes by Erling Braut Haaland on Instagram, further showing his preference for using his full family identity.

WHO IS ERLING HAALAND’S MOTHER?

Haaland’s mother, Gry Marita Braut, was a Norwegian heptathlon champion. She passed on her athletic pedigree to her son, influencing the explosive physical traits that make him one of football’s most feared strikers.

WHO IS ERLING HAALAND’S FATHER?

His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, is a former Premier League midfielder who played for Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, and Manchester City.

Born in England during Alf’s time at Leeds, Erling grew up a City supporter — a bond reinforced when his father later played for the blue half of Manchester. Alf also acts as his son’s advisor, having guided key career moves from Dortmund to City.

Though Alf’s career ended in 2003 due to a serious knee injury, he remains a well-respected figure, remembered for his tough midfield style and his infamous rivalry with Roy Keane.
