Why Jobe Bellingham Was Subbed by Dortmund Boss

Bellingham Subbed Again in Dortmund’s Clash with Union Berlin

Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac has once again substituted Jobe Bellingham early, raising questions about the teenager’s role in the squad.

The 19-year-old midfielder was withdrawn in the 70th minute of Dortmund’s Bundesliga match against Union Berlin, just a week after being taken off at halftime against St. Pauli.

Match Recap

Bellingham started the game in midfield but failed to complete the full 90 minutes. Dortmund’s marquee summer signing, who arrived from Sunderland, was expected to link defense and attack.

However, he looked out of sync with Kovac’s tactical system.

The substitution comes amid growing scrutiny, especially after a reported clash between Bellingham’s family and Dortmund’s sporting director following his earlier removal against St. Pauli.

Kovac Explains His Decision

Speaking after the match, Niko Kovac addressed the substitution.

“He has to stay behind the opposing strikers,” Kovac told reporters. “It’s no use if he drops too deep and we play four against two in the build-up. Jobe comes from the English Championship, where the pace is different – he still has to get used to it.”

The coach emphasized patience, reminding fans that the Bundesliga requires a different rhythm compared to the Championship.

Bigger Picture for Dortmund

Bellingham’s slow start is a concern for Dortmund, who signed him as their headline summer transfer.

Expectations were high, given his family name and reputation in England. But so far, the teenager has struggled to find his best form in Germany.

The club, currently balancing its Bundesliga campaign and European commitments, needs consistency in midfield.

Internal pressure has also grown after the off-field disputes surrounding his early substitutions.

Next Game: Heidenheim on September 13

Bellingham also suffered a facial injury after a heavy collision in the first half against Union Berlin.

Despite this, he hopes to feature strongly when Dortmund face Heidenheim on September 13.

Fans will be watching closely to see if Kovac trusts him with more minutes.

The coming weeks will be crucial for Jobe Bellingham. Can he adapt to Kovac’s system and prove himself as a long-term starter at Dortmund?
