Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has developed into one of the Premier League’s standout players, following his decisive role in the Blues’ dramatic 3-2 comeback win over West Ham.
Fernandez scored the stoppage-time winner at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea recovered from conceding two early goals, with Joao Pedro and Marc Cucurella pulling the hosts level before his late strike.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said:
“Enzo Fernandez gets the winning goal. A lot is spoken about the top midfield players in the Premier League… but he is right up there with the best players in the Premier League.”
“He is one of the best box-crashers we see in the Premier League. Permanently getting on the end of things.”
Carragher added that Fernandez has outgrown the role he was initially expected to play after arriving from Benfica:
“I don’t see him as a holding midfield player. He is a number 8 or a number 10, getting into the box and getting goals. He is one of the top midfield players in the Premier League.”
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior also underlined Fernandez’s importance amid recent transfer speculation.
“He’s a Chelsea player. He’s very important to me,” Rosenior said.
After the match, Rosenior told the BBC:
“I thought Enzo Fernandez’s performance was absolutely world class… He’s a special player.”
